Turning Compliance Challenges into Success

Last month, Ithaca Health Ltd. responded to an Alberta OHS Officer's order for specialized air sampling at an Edmonton oilfield equipment facility, showcasing the value of professional occupational hygiene beyond mere compliance.

The Situation:

During equipment refurbishment operations involving epoxy coatings removal for downhole drilling tools, concerns arose about worker exposure. This critical process includes heating, buffing, and cleaning, essential for preparing tools for threading and repair before redeployment in Alberta's oil fields.

The Science:

Our team monitored four specific compounds released during epoxy removal, including a respiratory sensitizer, a known carcinogen, and respiratory and Central Nervous System toxins.

The Outcome:

Worker exposures remained below Alberta OHS limits due to the client's ventilation practices. No additional controls like respiratory protection were necessary, enabling work to proceed with documented compliance.

Why This Matters:

Professional assessment can transform potential risks into opportunities by confirming the effectiveness of existing safety practices. This evidence-based approach not only ensures regulatory compliance but also enhances operational efficiency and worker confidence, showcasing the proactive role of occupational hygiene in supporting Alberta businesses.
